Eight Tips To Keep Your Boxing Gloves in Top Shape - Including How To Wash Your Boxing Gloves

If you want to be in the best shape of your life it requires the right conditioning.  Maintaining your equipment is no different.  Your boxing gloves require the proper care and cleaning and its important to know how to wash your boxing gloves correctly.  Improper maintenance will cause them to deteriorate and smell over time, and nobody wants to be the guy at the gym that smells funky.  Below are some great ways to get your gloves ready for the next round.

Whether you are stepping into the ring with a new pair of gloves, or a used pair, you'll want to keep them in the fight as long as possible.  Making sure your gloves are cleaned regularly will keep them in the best shape and knock out any foul odors.  “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and maintaining your gloves will save you a lot of money down the road.

Wipe Your Gloves and Dry Them Completely

Just wiping your gloves after a bout and allowing them to dry can make a big difference.  Simply wipe them with a damp rag and then dry them with a clean towel before allowing them to dry naturally.  Bacteria and germs thrive in moist environments.  You can punch harmful bacteria in the nose by allowing your gloves to dry out properly in a well ventilated area.  Make sure they dry completely by hanging them in a place with plenty of airflow and rotating them regularly.  Never put them in a washer or dryer because that will destroy them.  Wiping your boxing gloves and drying them properly will help them stay in top condition for a long time.

Wear Hand Wraps

Hand wraps not only protect your hands, they also protect your gloves.  Your hands sweat more than any place on your body, so during a workout your gloves are not only going to absorb blows but also all the sweat from your hands.  Over time this will cause your gloves to grow bacteria.  Hand wraps will help prevent your gloves from soaking up so much sweat and accumulating bacteria.  The hand wraps will block the sweat from your hands and wrist before it it is able to reach your gloves.

Don't Put Them In Your Gym Bag

Bacteria love warm wet environments and placing your gloves in your gym bag right after a workout will increase germ and bacterial growth.  It's always best to keep your boxing gloves and other equipment separate.  After fighting for hours in the ring you might forget to unpack your bag.  Leaving your gloves in those conditions will only cause them to stink and deteriorate more quickly.  Give your gloves a second wind by keeping them out of your gym bag.

Put Them In The Icebox After Washing

The best way to kill bacteria is to freeze it.  One way to knock that damp smell out of your gloves is to stick them in the freezer.  This is a simple way to pound odor-causing bacteria into submission.  Put your gloves in a plastic bag to protect them from the cold temperatures and stick them in the freezer.  Allow them to freeze between 24 and 48 hours.  Then remove them and allow them to dry naturally in a well ventilated area.  The freezing temperatures will kill the bacteria completely.

Wash Them With Saltwater

This is a common way to eliminate any bacteria that may be lingering on your gloves.

Take a clean container that is big enough to hold them and fill it with hot water.  Your gloves will need to be completely submerged.  Then pour roughly 50g of salt into the container and stir to make sure it mixes thoroughly with the water.  Next, put your gloves in the container and let them soak for 24 hours.  Remove your gloves after 24 hours and dry according to the material you gloves are made of.  The saltwater will kill the bacteria and remove any odors associated with it.  This is a cheap and effective way to keep your boxing gloves clean and fresh.

The Stuffing Method

Another way to punch moisture out of your gloves is to stuff them with an absorbent material.  Paper towels, newspapers, or rags are just a few examples.  However, the best way to keep your gloves in the ring are with glove dogs.  These are two cotton bags filled with cedar chips.  The cedar chips reduce moisture in your gloves and prevent bacteria growth.  In addition, they keep your gloves smelling nice, so a pair of glove dogs may be a wise investment.

Boxing Glove Deodorizers

You condition yourself to stay in top shape, and keeping your boxing gloves in the right state is no different.  They just require a little cleaning and maintenance.  Improper care will cause your gloves to deteriorate and smell over time.  Whether you have a new or used pair of gloves keep these tips in mind.  Hopefully they will help keep your gloves throwing punches and save you a lot of money over time.
